Under dark skies the unaided eye sees roughly 2,500 stars at once plus the Milky Way.

The Big Dipper and the North StarUse the Big Dipper's pointer stars to find Polaris, and read direction and latitude from the North Star.The Dipper's outer bowl stars point to Polaris, which marks true north and whose altitude equals your latitude. Polaris is not especially bright — its value is that it barely moves while the sky wheels around it.

The Seasonal SkyRecognize the signature constellations of each season and explain why they change.Orion anchors winter evenings and the Milky Way's Sagittarius core anchors summer because Earth's night side faces a different direction in space each season. Dark Skies and Night VisionMitigate light pollution and protect night vision with dark adaptation, red light, and averted vision.Skyglow is the biggest limit on stargazing — sites are rated on the Bortle scale, and a darker site beats better gear. Eyes need 20-30 minutes to dark-adapt, red light preserves that adaptation, and averted vision reveals faint objects.

Binoculars FirstUse ordinary binoculars as a first astronomical instrument and know their best targets.7x50 or 10x50 binoculars gather about 50 times more light than the eye and show lunar craters, Jupiter's Galilean moons, the Pleiades, the Andromeda galaxy, and Milky Way star fields. Earth's rotation axis points within about a degree of Polaris, so as the planet spins the whole sky appears to wheel around that point at 15 degrees per hour.

Roughly how many stars can the unaided eye see at once under a truly dark sky?

Under dark conditions the naked eye sees roughly 2,500 stars at any moment — a number light pollution can slash to a few dozen in cities.

How do you find Polaris using the Big Dipper?

The pointer stars Merak and Dubhe at the outer edge of the bowl point almost directly at Polaris, about five pointer-separations away.

The height of Polaris above your horizon tells you:

Polaris sits almost exactly over Earth's north pole, so its altitude above the horizon equals your latitude — near the horizon at the equator, overhead at the North Pole.

Why can't you see Orion on July evenings?

As Earth orbits the Sun, the night side faces different constellations each season. In July, Orion lies in the same direction as the Sun, so it is up during daylight.

A bright, steady, untwinkling light along the ecliptic is most likely:

Planets show tiny disks rather than points, which averages out atmospheric shimmer, and they always travel near the ecliptic — the plane of the solar system projected on the sky.
