Why do tram rails have a groove cast into them, unlike mainline railway rails?
The groove is what lets a railway and a street occupy the same ground: the flange runs in the slot, so the street surface can come right up to the railhead with no curb to trip on. It's heavier and pricier than mainline rail, not lighter.
A tram and a bus are stuck behind the same double-parked van. Why is this a worse problem for the tram?
The rail that gives the tram its efficiency and precision also removes its only escape. One obstruction halts the whole line — the central weakness of running rails in mixed traffic.
Why was Richmond, Virginia a shrewd place to prove the electric streetcar?
Richmond's hills exceeded 10% grades — impossible for horses and hard to justify a cable installation for. Succeeding there proved electricity could work anywhere.
