🔎 Spotting Number Patterns
Numbers love to make patterns! Learn to find the rule — jumping up, jumping down, or repeating — and guess what number comes next like a real detective.
What you’ll learn
- What Comes Next?Find the rule in counting-up, counting-back, and missing-number patterns.A number pattern follows a rule that repeats. Counting up adds 1: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Counting back takes 1 away: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. When a number is missing, the rule fills the gap — in 2, 4, __, 8 the jump is 2, so the missing number is 6.
- Kinds of PatternsTell even from odd and sort growing, shrinking, and repeating patterns.Even numbers make pairs with none left over (2, 4, 6); odd numbers leave one lonely (1, 3, 5). Some patterns grow bigger, some go down, and some repeat like red, blue, red, blue. Finding the rule lets you order numbers and know what comes next.
Questions this course answers
In the pattern 1, 2, 3, 4, what comes next?
The pattern jumps up by 1 each time, so after 4 comes 5.
Counting back: 5, 4, 3, __. What comes next?
Counting back takes away 1 each time, so after 3 comes 2.
Find the missing number: 2, 4, __, 8.
The pattern jumps by 2, so the missing number between 4 and 8 is 6.
Which number is EVEN (makes pairs with none left over)?
6 splits into 3 pairs with none left over, so it is even.
The pattern red, blue, red, blue is a...
The colors repeat over and over, so it is a repeating pattern.
Put these in counting order, smallest first: 6, 2, 8, 4.
Smallest first gives 2, 4, 6, 8 — counting up by 2s.
