What Your Senses Tell YouDefine an observation as information gathered directly through the five senses.An observation is what you notice through your senses — seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, or feeling. It is certain because it comes to you directly, like feeling that the grass is wet. Each sense makes its own kind of observation.

The Story Your Brain AddsDefine an interpretation (inference) as a guess that explains an observation, and tell it apart from the observation.An interpretation, which scientists call an inference, is the story your brain adds to explain an observation. The observation (wet grass) is certain, but the interpretation (it rained) is a guess, because other causes like dew or a sprinkler are possible.
  3. Same Clue, Different StoriesRecognize that one observation can support several interpretations, and identify the observation among statements.A single observation, such as footprints in mud, can have many possible explanations (a dog, a person, a fox). Careful thinkers separate the certain observation from the guessed story and stay open to more than one interpretation until they find more clues.
  4. Be a Careful ObserverSort statements into observations and interpretations, and describe before deciding, including about one's own body.Observations can be sensed directly; interpretations are guesses about why. Describing what you actually see before deciding what it means makes reasoning stronger. Body feelings like 'I feel hot' are observations, while 'I have a fever' is an interpretation best checked by measuring.

Observe First, Then GuessApply the observe-first, interpret-second habit the way scientists do.Scientists observe carefully — looking, counting, and measuring — and record only what they truly notice, then propose and test explanations. The habit is to state observations first and interpretations second, keeping an open mind about which story is right.

What is an observation?

An observation is what you actually see, hear, smell, taste, or feel — not a guess.

You feel that the grass is wet and you think, 'It rained last night.' What is 'It rained last night'?

You only sensed that the grass is wet. 'It rained' is a guess about why — an interpretation.

Why can the wet grass have more than one story?

The observation (wet grass) is certain, but many different causes could explain it, so the interpretation is a guess.

Which of these is an observation, not a guess?

'There are wet footprints on the floor' is something you can see. The others are interpretations about who or why.

'My hands feel cold' and 'Winter has arrived.' Which is the observation?

You can feel cold hands directly, so that is an observation. 'Winter has arrived' is a guess about why.

You feel hot and a grown-up uses a thermometer. Why is that helpful?

'I feel hot' is a feeling; the thermometer measures it carefully, turning it into a precise observation before anyone decides what it means.
