Why can we say a jaguar is 'powered by the sun,' even though it never eats sunlight?
The jaguar eats animals that ate plants, and the plants caught the sun's energy. Follow any animal's food backward and you reach sunlight on a leaf. All the energy in the rainforest starts with the sun.
Why are green plants called 'producers'?
Through photosynthesis, plants turn sunlight, water, and air into sugar — their food. They produce the food that every other living thing will eventually eat, so they are called producers.
When a sloth eats a leaf, what actually passes from the leaf into the sloth?
The leaf stored energy from the sun. When the sloth eats it, that stored energy passes into the sloth's body so it can move and grow. This is how energy travels up from producers to consumers.
What is the difference between a food chain and a food web?
A food chain is one neat line, like sun → leaf → sloth → jaguar. But animals eat many different foods, so when you draw every connection at once, the chain becomes a tangled web.
Why are there millions of plants but only a few jaguars in a rainforest?
Most energy is used up or lost as heat at each step, so roughly only 1/10 reaches the next level. The base of the pyramid holds lots of energy and many plants; the top has little energy left, so it supports only a few big predators.
How do decomposers help the plants at the start of the web?
Decomposers break down dead leaves and animals and return their nutrients to the soil. Plants drink up those nutrients to grow strong — so the recyclers feed the producers, and the whole loop starts again.
