The Dutch built a company depot there in the 1620s whose commercial character made it tolerant by accounting rather than principle — but for two centuries nobody could collect on the geography.

The commissioners explicitly rejected 'circles, ovals and stars' because right-angled houses are 'the most cheap to build and the most convenient to live in': the grid subdivides into the standard 25 × 100 ft lot, which can be priced, mortgaged and traded sight unseen. They left almost no public space, reasoning the rivers would supply the air — an error corrected in the 1850s by buying 843 acres back out of the grid as Central Park.

- Consolidation and the Nickel That Built the BoroughsExplain how the 1898 consolidation was a legal fiction until the flat-fare subway made distance free — and what freezing that fare for 44 years cost.The five boroughs merged on 1 January 1898 into a city of 3.4 million that had no way to cross itself; the IRT's 9.1-mile line of 27 October 1904 changed that at a flat five-cent fare. Because a flat fare makes distance free, cheap outer land became close-in land, and the boroughs filled along the tracks — 7.5 million people by 1940. The nickel then became politics: frozen until 1948, it strangled the private companies, the city bought them in 1940, and deferred maintenance became the only balancing item — a bill that came due in the 1970s.

They filled Lower East Side tenements built to the property line on the grid's standard lot, producing some of the densest ground on earth until the 1901 Tenement House Act. The 1924 quotas demoted Ellis Island to a detention centre; Hart–Celler reopened the door in 1965 onto a different world, and it was those arrivals — not a plan — that refilled the million-person hole the suburbs left and kept New York from becoming Detroit.

His expressways treated settled districts as distance to be crossed: roughly 170,000 New Yorkers were evicted in the seven postwar years, and the Cross-Bronx (1963) split the South Bronx's economy from itself. Jane Jacobs's 'Death and Life of Great American Cities' (1961) argued that sidewalk density was the mechanism, not the disorder; the city rejected the Lower Manhattan Expressway in 1964, saving the lofts that became SoHo.

Recovery came from restoring the flow and reopening the door, leaving a city of 8.8 million on 300 square miles at ~29,000 people per square mile, speaking 800 languages.

What makes New York's harbour better than its Atlantic rivals in the way that actually mattered?
Deep, ice-free and defensible are all true and all shared with other ports. The Hudson is the differentiator: a tidal arm of the sea reaching 150 miles to Albany, pointing at the one gap in the mountain wall. Even so, the harbour alone made New York nothing much — it took the canal to collect on it.
Why is a 90% cut in freight cost a change in kind rather than a change in degree?
At ~$100 a ton, moving wheat from Buffalo to New York cost more than the wheat — so it went to New Orleans instead. At ~$10 (New York State Museum figures for 1815 vs 1825) the Midwest could grow grain for Liverpool. The canal didn't improve a trade; it created one, and Cleveland, Detroit and Chicago with it.
The 1811 commissioners rejected 'circles, ovals and stars' in favour of a strict grid. What does their stated reasoning reveal about the plan's purpose?
A rectangle subdivides into the standard 25 × 100 ft lot, and a standard lot can be priced, mortgaged and traded by someone who has never seen it. The grid turned Manhattan dirt into a commodity — which is also why it left almost no public space, and why Central Park had to be bought back out of it as a rectangle.
How did New York's response to a blank page differ from London's after the Great Fire?
London traced its old lines back on because ~13,000 freeholds survived the fire and had to be honoured. Manhattan above Houston was farms — nothing to buy out. The same forces (property and haste) produced opposite maps, which is why one city is a tangle and the other is a grid.
Why did the elevator matter more than the steel frame for making tall buildings desirable?
Before Otis's 1854 safety-brake demonstration, the top floor was the cheapest space in the building. Once a machine carries you, the top floor has the best light, air and view — and becomes the dearest. The frame then removed the other ceiling. Land value did the rest.
Manhattan's skyscrapers cluster downtown and in Midtown with a low stretch between. What does the evidence actually say causes that gap?
The bedrock story is the popular one, but Jason Barr and colleagues checked it against depth-to-bedrock and building data and found the effect is real but small — a few per cent on cost, not a mile-wide veto. Deep foundations are an expense, not a prohibition. New York goes up where the flow arrives: the harbour, then Grand Central.
