Friction: The Grabbing ForceExplain that friction is a force made by rubbing surfaces that slows motion, and that rougher surfaces make more of it.Friction is a force made when two surfaces rub together, and it always acts against the direction of movement, so it slows things down. Rougher surfaces make more friction than smooth ones. Friction can be useful too — bike brakes and grippy shoes rely on it.
  2. Air Resistance and DragDescribe air resistance and how surface size and speed change it.Air resistance, or drag, is the push of air against anything moving through it. A bigger surface facing the air, like an open parachute, makes more air resistance and slows things down. To go faster, racers use smooth, streamlined shapes that cut through the air.
  3. Slowing Down in WaterExplain water resistance and how streamlined shapes reduce it.Water is much thicker than air, so water resistance pushes back hard on things moving through it. Streamlined shapes — smooth and pointed, like a fish or dolphin — face much less water resistance than flat, boxy shapes, so they move through water quickly.
