What you’ll learn

  1. Follow the check-call-care framework and respond safely to an emergency.First aid starts with checking the scene for safety, then checking the person, then calling 911 and giving care. An unresponsive but breathing person is placed in the recovery position to keep the airway clear.
  2. Recognize cardiac arrest and perform hands-only CPR and use an AED.In cardiac arrest the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally. Call 911, push hard and fast in the center of the chest at 100 to 120 compressions per minute, use an AED by following its prompts, and continue until help arrives.
  3. Respond to choking, bleeding, burns, and other common injuries. For choking, alternate back blows and abdominal thrusts. Control bleeding with firm direct pressure, cool burns with running water, use RICE for sprains, and act with calm confidence since doing something is better than freezing.

Cardiac arrest means that:

In cardiac arrest the heart stops circulating blood to vital organs, and the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally.

The Red Cross recommends how many chest compressions per minute in CPR?

The American Red Cross recommends 100 to 120 chest compressions per minute.
