What you’ll learn

  1. Counting Up in 3sCount forward in steps of 3 from 0 up to at least 30.Skip counting by 3s makes hops of three: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15. The numbers do not all end in the same digit, so it helps to listen to the rhythm and practice until the pattern feels automatic.
  2. Counting Back in 3sCount backward in steps of 3 from 30 down toward 0.Counting by 3s backward takes away three each hop: 30, 27, 24, 21. The numbers get smaller each step. Practicing both directions builds strong number sense for the three times table.
  3. Tens From Any NumberCount forward in tens from any number, not only multiples of 10.You can start skip counting by tens from any number: 7, 17, 27, 37. The secret is that adding ten only changes the tens digit — the ones digit stays exactly the same the whole way.
  4. Backwards in TensCount backward in tens from any number, keeping the ones digit fixed.Counting back by tens takes away ten each hop: 83, 73, 63, 53. Just like counting up, only the tens digit changes while the ones digit stays put. This makes mental subtraction of ten quick and easy.

Questions this course answers

Count by 10s from 7: 7, 17, 27, __ ?

Add 10 to 27; the 7 stays, so it becomes 37.

When you add 10 to 45, which digit changes?

Adding ten raises the tens digit; the ones stay the same, making 55.

Count back by 10s from 83: 83, 73, __ ?

73 minus 10 is 63; the ones digit 3 stays put.
