What you’ll learn

  1. Longer or ShorterCompare and order lengths using longer, shorter, and the bigger number. To compare lengths measured in the same unit, look at the numbers — the bigger number is longer. Three or more lengths can be lined up in order from shortest to longest.
  2. Heavier or LighterCompare weights using heavier and lighter, and sort objects by weight.A balance scale drops on the heavier side. Objects can be sorted as heavier or lighter than a chosen thing, like a school bag, to compare their weights.
  3. More or LessCompare amounts of liquid using more and less.Amount tells us how much a container holds. A larger container, like a jug, usually holds more than a small one, like a cup.
  4. Compare CarefullyUnderstand that fair comparisons need the same unit for both things. The golden rule of comparing is to measure both things in the same unit first. Then the bigger number really is more — whether it is length, weight, or amount.

Questions this course answers

Which is longer, 12 cm or 8 cm?

12 is a bigger number than 8, so 12 cm is longer.

Which is shorter, a 5 cm nail or a 9 cm nail?

5 is a smaller number than 9, so the 5 cm nail is shorter.

A rock weighs 2 kilograms and a feather weighs 2 grams. Which is heavier?

Kilograms are much heavier than grams, so the 2 kg rock is heavier.

Which is the longest: 3 cm, 10 cm, or 6 cm?

10 is the biggest number, so 10 cm is the longest.

To compare two lengths fairly, they should be measured in...?

Using the same unit lets you compare the numbers fairly.

Which holds more water, a big jug or a small cup?

A big jug has more space inside, so it holds more water than a small cup.
