- What the Mean IsUnderstand the mean as a fair-share, balance-point average.The mean is the fair-share average: the level you'd reach if every value were evened out to the same amount. Picturing uneven towers of blocks flattened to equal height shows why the mean sits somewhere in the middle of the data.
- Calculating ItCalculate the mean by adding values and dividing by the count.To calculate the mean, add up every value to get the total, then divide by how many values there are. For 72, 85, 90, 68, 95 the total is 410 and 410 ÷ 5 = 82. The mean always lands between the smallest and largest values.
- What It Really Tells YouInterpret what the mean does — and does not — tell you.The mean summarises a whole data set in one number, but that number hides the spread: two groups with the same mean can have very different values. The mean is a powerful summary as long as you remember to ask what detail it might be hiding.
