- It's Not Treasure HuntingGrasp the discipline's central claim: archaeology studies context, not treasure, and an object stripped of context is nearly meaningless.An artifact's meaning lives in its context — its layer, position, and associations. Looting destroys that information permanently even though the object survives, which is why archaeologists treat context as the most valuable and fragile thing at a site.
- The Science of What People Threw AwaySee why discarded material (middens, garbage) is a richer, more honest record than monuments.Monuments send curated messages; refuse does not. Middens record real diet and daily life across generations. William Rathje's Garbage Project applied the method to modern landfills, showing that what people discard contradicts what they report — material evidence has no incentive to flatter.

- Whose Past Is It?Engage fairly with repatriation and the discipline's colonial history without adjudicating.Many famous antiquities were taken under colonial power (Parthenon Marbles, Benin Bronzes; 'Priam's Treasure' is claimed by four nations). Arguments for retention (universal access, legality at the time) and return (consent, identity, looting) are both serious. NAGPRA (1990) requires returning Native American remains and sacred objects.
- Ancient Aliens and the Real ThingRecognize pseudoarchaeology as a named, refuted phenomenon and articulate how real archaeology differs.'Ancient aliens' and lost-race theories disproportionately deny non-European peoples credit for their own monuments — often old racism in disguise. Methodologically, real archaeology starts from evidence and can be proven wrong; pseudoarchaeology starts from a conclusion and can't. Falsifiability is the dividing line.
Questions this course answers
Why does the course say a looter who finds a gold artifact 'destroys knowledge' even though the object survives intact?
The physical object endures, but the web of relationships that gave it meaning — where it lay, with what, how deep — is annihilated the moment it's ripped out unrecorded. A site can only be read once.
In an undisturbed archaeological section, a pit was dug down from a medieval layer, cutting through Roman layers below it. How old is the pit's fill relative to the Roman layers?
Superposition is about the order of events, not just depth. A cut must be younger than everything it cuts through, even if its fill now sits deep among older layers — recognizing such intrusions is central to reading a site.
Why does the course claim that a well-run excavation is really 'a device for producing paperwork'?
Since a site can be dug only once and digging consumes it, the physical layer is traded for a detailed record. Good finds with poor records destroy information; the archive is the real product.
Radiocarbon dating originally assumed atmospheric carbon-14 had always been constant, which was false. How did scientists correct their dates?
Dendrochronology provides wood of known calendar age. Radiocarbon-dating that wood revealed the drift between radiocarbon and calendar years, producing the IntCal calibration curve that corrects every modern date.
What does the course mean by the 'honest gap' between a potsherd and a claim like 'they worshipped the sun'?
Observation (postholes, bones, orientation) is separated from interpretation (house, diet, belief) by reasoning. The discipline's integrity lies in flagging which is which and never letting inference pose as direct evidence.
Beyond being unscientific, why does the course call pseudoarchaeology (e.g. 'aliens built the pyramids') often an 'insult'?
These theories almost always credit someone else — aliens, a 'lost race' — for the monuments of non-European peoples, stealing real achievements from those who earned them. Methodologically, they also start from a conclusion and can't be proven wrong.
