- Art Is a Technology for SeeingAdopt the course's central lens — art as a technology for seeing whose style changes when a society's needs change — and place this course within the four-course sequence.The 'ladder' model of art history (a slow climb toward realism) is false and makes learners condescend to most of the art they'll see. The better model: a picture is a tool a society builds to make something visible, and when the target changes, the tool changes. Medieval flatness is a decision, not a failure — the same century built structurally daring Gothic cathedrals. This course spans Egypt to the High Renaissance; its sibling courses continue the story (Art History II) and teach close-looking (How to Look at a Painting).
- Egypt: A Picture Built to Last ForeverRead the Egyptian figure as a rational 'aspective' system built for eternity, and learn hierarchical scale — a device that will return, transformed, in Christian art.Egyptian art held one visual system nearly unchanged for ~3,000 years because it worked: tomb pictures were magical equipment for the afterlife, so each part of a figure is shown in its clearest, most complete form (head in profile, eye frontal, shoulders square, legs in profile) — an 'aspective' image of what is known, not a 'perspective' snapshot of what was seen. Size signals status, not distance (hierarchical scale), a device that later Christian art will deliberately revive.
- Greece: The Invention of the Living BodyWatch Greek art move from the Egyptian-style kouros to the living, weight-shifting classical body, and understand Greek naturalism as idealized, not photographic.Greek sculpture began around 600 BCE with rigid, frontal kouroi borrowed from Egypt, then over ~150 years learned to make the body look alive. The hinge is contrapposto — resting weight on one leg, which tilts the hips and shoulders and curves the spine (the Kritios Boy, c. 480 BCE, is a landmark). But classical naturalism is idealized: Polykleitos's Doryphoros is built from a canon of perfect proportions. Realism plus idealism is the Classical inheritance the Renaissance will later reach back for.
- Rome: The Face That Tells the TruthSee Rome as both the preserver of Greek art and the inventor of the truthful individual portrait (verism) and the emotionally shaped interior.Rome absorbed Greek art — most 'Greek' masterpieces survive only as Roman copies — but added verism: portraits keeping every wrinkle, because in the Republic age signalled authority and public service. Verism idealizes character rather than beauty: the same seeing-technology re-aimed at the individual. Rome also reinvented architectural space, using concrete and the arch to make interiors (the Pantheon's domed, oculus-lit room) into emotional experiences — a discovery Christian builders will inherit.
- The Christian Turn: Going Flat on PurposeReframe the shift to 'flat' Christian art as a deliberate re-tooling — reviving frontality, gold grounds, and hierarchical scale to make the divine present rather than to depict the visible world.As Rome turned Christian (4th–5th c.), art abandoned weight, contrapposto, space, and directional light for frontal figures on flat gold — not through lost skill but through a changed target. The classical picture is a 'window' onto real space; the icon refuses that pretence because its job is to make the sacred present to the worshipper. Hierarchical scale returns (Christ larger than mortals), reviving the ancient Egyptian logic. Flatness is a conscious re-selection of a non-illusionistic toolkit, not a decline.
- Byzantium and the Power of the IconUnderstand the Byzantine icon as an object for real spiritual encounter (not admiration), and see, through iconoclasm, how seriously a culture can take the power of images.The Byzantine Empire carried the sacred style to magnificence in gold mosaic and the floating dome of Hagia Sophia (537 CE), engineering interiors to feel like heaven. Its central object is the icon: not a reminder of a holy figure but a point of real presence, venerated and copied faithfully rather than 'improved' — so every stylistic 'limitation' (frontal gaze, gold ground) serves the object's purpose. The iconoclasm controversy (8th–9th c.), fought bitterly and settled in 843, shows how high the stakes of image-theory could run.
- The Medieval West: Building the Book and the CathedralSee the medieval West's two great forms — the illuminated manuscript and the Gothic cathedral — as sacred technologies, with stained-glass light understood as a near-embodiment of the divine.After Rome, western Europe concentrated sacred art into the illuminated manuscript, where denied space and dense pattern (the Book of Kells, c. 800) make flatness a contemplative discipline. From c. 1140, Gothic engineering (pointed arch, ribbed vault, flying buttress) replaced walls with stained glass; Abbot Suger's theology held that radiant beauty lifts the soul toward God. Stained glass works because it is lit through, not reflected — for a faith equating God with light, the medium nearly embodied the divine.
- Giotto Cracks the GoldRecognise Giotto as the turning point who reintroduced weight, real ground, and legible human emotion into the sacred picture — reopening the classical question after a thousand years.Around 1305 in the Scrovegni Chapel, Giotto painted holy scenes whose figures have weight, stand on real ground, and show specific human emotion (the Lamentation). Judged against his flat, gold Byzantine training — not against the later Renaissance — this is revolutionary: the first serious return of the classical question 'what does this look like now?' since Rome. Giotto keeps the sacred subject and gold sky but smuggles the observed world's weight back in, setting the direction for the next two centuries.
- The Renaissance Idea: The World Worth SeeingDefine the Renaissance as the rebirth of a classical attitude — that the visible human world is worth depicting with maximum skill — and understand the mix of causes that made Florence its centre.The Renaissance ('rebirth'), centred on 15th-century Florence, revived the ancient attitude that the physical, human world deserves serious depiction — the movement called humanism. Botticelli's Birth of Venus (c. 1485) makes it visible: a classical nude goddess at the centre of a major work. Its causes pile up: Roman ruins and models at hand, banking wealth creating demanding patrons (the Medici), rediscovered classical texts, and a competitive urban culture prizing individual genius. The famous techniques all grow from this widened target.
- The Invention of PerspectiveGrasp linear perspective as an invented, teachable mathematical method (Brunelleschi c.1420, Alberti 1435) that reopens the pictorial 'window' — while noting its built-in assumption of a single fixed viewpoint.Linear perspective was invented, not rediscovered: Brunelleschi worked out the geometry (~1420) and Alberti published it as a method (1435). It rests on one fact — parallel lines receding from the viewer converge at a vanishing point on the eye-level horizon — turned into a drawing rule with orthogonals and transversals. Masaccio's Holy Trinity (~1427) is its first monumental masterpiece, opening illusionistic depth into a flat wall and returning to scale-by-distance. Perspective assumes one fixed viewer — a gift that later becomes a cage.
- Oil and the North: Van Eyck's Other RevolutionRecognise oil paint — perfected by Van Eyck in 1430s Flanders — as a second Renaissance revolution aimed at surface and light, complementing Italy's mathematical conquest of space, and destined to become Western painting's default medium.As Florence invented perspective, Netherlandish painters — above all Jan van Eyck in the 1430s — perfected oil paint. Oil's slow drying allows seamless blending and transparent glazes, so light seems to glow from within; Van Eyck used it for microscopic truth of texture and reflection (the Arnolfini Portrait, 1434). Italy conquered space through mathematics; the North conquered surface through oil — two technologies for the same widened target. Oil then displaced tempera and became Western painting's default medium for four centuries.
- The High Renaissance: The SummitSee the High Renaissance as the full fusion of real-and-ideal body, mathematical space, and oil technique — and the moment the artist becomes a celebrated individual genius rather than an anonymous craftsman.Around 1500 Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael worked at once, hitting the classical target fully: Michelangelo's Creation of Adam (1508–12) renders a body both anatomically true and ideally beautiful, uniting the classical question with the Christian subject. Leonardo's sfumato melts every edge into atmospheric haze (the Mona Lisa), fusing northern oil with southern observation until the pictorial 'glass' vanishes. Simultaneously the artist becomes a named genius — courted, paid, and celebrated — a permanent shift toward organising art around individual makers.
- What the Window Won, and What It CostConsolidate the through-line — art as a shifting technology for seeing — and frame the Renaissance 'window' as an achievement built on a fixed single viewpoint whose dismantling drives everything in Art History II.The course's arc: Egypt's eternal picture, Greece's living body, Rome's truthful face, the Christian folding-away of realism, and its unfolding by Giotto and the Renaissance, armed with perspective, oil, and the individual genius, until painting became a flawless window (Raphael's School of Athens). A cause-effect view shows the Renaissance as a system: rediscovered antiquity, banking wealth, new technologies, and competitive city culture producing illusionistic space, the celebrated artist, and the visible world as art's great subject. But the window assumes one fixed viewer at one instant — a cage whose dismantling (Baroque motion, then the camera forcing abstraction) is the story of Art History II, with the Impressionists as its pivotal deep dive.

According to the course's central lens, why does medieval art look 'flat'?
The same centuries built structurally daring Gothic cathedrals, so lack of skill fails. Flatness is a re-selected tool aimed at a different target: eternity and divine presence, not the look of a real room.
Why did Egyptian artists draw a figure with the head in profile but the eye and shoulders frontal?
The 'aspective' image assembles each body part in its clearest, most permanent form because a tomb picture had to work as eternal equipment — it records what is known to be true, not a single chance viewpoint.
In Egyptian art, a pharaoh is drawn far larger than his servants. This tells you that he is:

What is contrapposto, and why does it matter?

The course warns that Greek naturalism is not photographic realism. Why?
Polykleitos built the Doryphoros from a set of perfect ratios. The Classical achievement is a body that reads as real and as ideal simultaneously — the exact target the Renaissance later reaches back for.
Why would a Roman patrician want a 'veristic' portrait showing every wrinkle and sagging jowl?
Verism re-aims the seeing-technology at the truthful individual because Roman society prized experience and duty. It idealizes character rather than beauty — the same tool, a new target.
