First come physical barriers like skin and mucus that stop most invaders. Behind them, innate immunity responds fast but generally, while adaptive immunity is slower, specific, and remembers past invaders. Immune cells are made in bone marrow and trained in the thymus, and they recognize invaders by reading surface molecules called antigens that mark cells as self or non-self.
