📘 Why does starting feel harder than continuing?
You sit down at the same desk, with the same document open, the same coffee going cold beside it — and for a few minutes nothing happens. It does not feel like resistance exactly. It feels more like the machinery has to be brought back up

Questions this course answers
In the café study, what changed as a customer's coffee card filled up?
Nothing about the coffee, the price or the programme changed. Interpurchase times fell by about 20%, or seven-tenths of a day, purely as a function of how little card was left.
Both café cards required exactly ten purchases. Why did the twelve-stamp card get finished nearly three days sooner?
This is the cleanest evidence in the topic precisely because the effort requirement was held identical. The authors also ran process experiments to rule out sunk cost, so the acceleration is about perceived distance, not about protecting an investment.
What did the 2025 meta-analysis find about the two effects from Zeigarnik's and Ovsiankina's 1920s work?
Interrupted tasks accounted for a weighted 49.16% of everything recalled, where chance alone gives 50 — so the famous memory effect is absent. Resumption came out at 66.79% across twenty publications, well above chance.
Put the cold-start problem in the order it actually happens.
Mark and colleagues found that reorientation often runs on something in the environment rather than in the head — a cursor sitting at the end of the last typed word. Tidying away is what deletes it.
Match each finding to what it does to the claim that starting is the hard part.
Two of these are the case for the claim and two are the case against it, and a course that gave you only the first pair would be selling you something. The honest position is that the start is usually expensive, not always the most expensive.
