Niépce was already getting images out of a camera obscura by 1816. What was wrong with them?

The camera obscura had thrown a picture on a wall for centuries. Niépce's contribution was chemical: a way to make that trace stay.

What did light actually do to the bitumen coating?

Exposure made the bitumen resistant to solvent where the light fell. Washing removed the still-soft material and left hardened bitumen standing on bare metal.

Why was architecture the practical first subject?

Bitumen was far less sensitive than the silver compounds that followed, so only things that stayed put could register. Daguerre's 1838 Boulevard du Temple shows the same rule: a busy street, emptied of everyone who kept moving.

Why is the familiar figure of "eight hours" treated carefully now?

The eight-hour figure comes from the picture itself — walls on opposite sides of the courtyard both appear lit. The Harry Ransom Center, which holds the plate, now describes the exposure as several days.

The stark black-and-white image of Le Gras in most books — what is it?

The real plate is a reflective direct positive that barely reads without controlled lighting. Gernsheim had the Eastman Kodak laboratory in London copy it in 1952, then touched the print up with watercolours to bring it closer to how he felt it ought to look.
