What you’ll learn

  1. Taking AwayUnderstand that subtraction means taking away, and count how many remain.Subtraction is taking some things away from a group. We started with 5 biscuits, 2 got eaten, and 3 were left. Adding makes a group bigger, but subtracting makes it smaller. After taking away, we count what is left.
  2. How Many Are Left?Solve 'take from' stories by counting what is left, or by hopping back. When something goes away, we count what stays to find how many are left. Four balloons take away 1 leaves 3. You can also hop backwards to subtract: start at 5, hop back 2, land on 3. Counting what is left solves the mystery every time.
  3. Act It OutAct out subtraction stories with toys and fingers and say how many remain.Acting out a story makes subtraction easy to see. Line up 5 toys, hide 2, and count the 3 you can still see. Fingers work too: hold up 5, fold 2 down, and 3 are left standing. Subtraction is taking away and counting what is left.
