Tectonic PlatesExplain that the crust is broken into slowly moving tectonic plates and where activity concentrates.The crust is divided into tectonic plates that drift on the mantle at fingernail-growth speed. Their edges — pulling apart, colliding, or sliding — produce most geologic activity, concentrated in zones like the Pacific Ring of Fire.
  3. VolcanoesDistinguish magma from lava and explain eruptions and land-building.A volcano is an opening where underground magma reaches the surface as lava. Pressure drives eruptions of lava, ash and gas; cooled lava builds new rock and land, including volcanic islands, and enriches soil despite the hazards.
  4. EarthquakesExplain earthquakes as plate slip along faults, how magnitude is measured, and basic safety.Earthquakes occur when stuck plates suddenly slip along a fault, shaking the ground. Seismographs record and measure their magnitude. People reduce risk with stronger buildings and 'drop, cover, and hold on'.
