What you’ll learn

  1. Little Words That Show WhereNotice that small words like in, on, and under tell where something is.Prepositions are tiny words that show where things are. Using in, on, and under, a child can say exactly where an object is located.
  2. In and OnUse 'in' for inside and 'on' for on top.IN means something is inside; ON means it rests on top. Children practice choosing the right word for simple everyday scenes.
  3. Under and OverUse 'under' for below and 'over/above' for higher up.UNDER means below something; OVER and ABOVE mean higher up. These are opposite position words children can picture like a see-saw.
  4. Beside, Between, Behind, In Front OfUse more position words: beside, between, behind, and in front of.BESIDE means next to, BETWEEN means in the middle of two things, BEHIND means at the back, and IN FRONT OF means at the front.
  5. Which Way: To and FromUse 'to' and 'from' to show direction of movement. Some prepositions show which way something moves: TO means toward, FROM means away. Together they describe a whole trip, and they differ from where-words like in and on.
  6. Say Exactly WhereSpot the preposition in a simple sentence and use position words in speech. In a sentence, the preposition usually comes just before the naming word and points to a place. Children practice finding the where-word and describing objects around them.
