What is the central idea the course uses to make the history of type 'legible'?
The course reads letterforms as fossils of their tools: the chisel's serif, the pen's thick-and-thin, the punchcutter's steel, the pixel. Learn the tools and the whole history becomes readable.
What distinguishes a serif typeface from a sans-serif one?
A serif is the small finishing stroke at a letter's end. 'Sans' is French for 'without.' This is typography's great dividing line, and for ~1,700 years nearly all Western type was serif.
Why does medieval blackletter have its dense, thick-and-thin, woven look?
A broad, flat nib automatically shades strokes thick and thin by its angle. Blackletter is what happens when you write economically and quickly with that tool on costly parchment.
What was Gutenberg's key innovation, and what did his first type imitate?
Presses already existed. Gutenberg's breakthrough was mass-produced, interchangeable cast-metal letters — and he cut them to look like the blackletter script readers expected, as new technologies often imitate the old.
As the roman typeface evolved from old-style (Garamond) to modern (Bodoni), what single feature grew, and why?
Contrast grew from gentle (old-style) to sharp (transitional) to extreme (modern). Each step tracked improving print technology; Bodoni's hairline strokes are ones no pen could make — pure product of the print shop.
Why were the first sans-serif letters considered strange, even 'grotesque,' when they appeared?
Sans-serifs have even strokes and blunt ends, showing no pen, nib, or chisel. Victorians found this toolless look alien and nicknamed them 'grotesques' — but that machine-like blankness became the future.
