Why are tropical cyclones given short, distinctive names?

A stable name gives forecasters, officials, media, and the public one memorable reference for a storm while its location and strength change.

In the Atlantic system, when does an organized tropical cyclone normally receive a name?

A tropical depression is numbered; at 39 mph sustained winds it becomes a tropical storm and receives the next name, before any possible hurricane stage.

Put the modern naming process in order

The regional list is agreed in advance, so the responsible warning center can assign the next name immediately when a cyclone qualifies.

Every Atlantic storm name disappears permanently after it is used once.

The six regular Atlantic lists rotate every six years. Only names withdrawn for sensitivity after especially notorious storms, or otherwise changed by the committee, do not return.

Why did the Atlantic stop using Greek letters after the regular list was exhausted?

The replacement supplemental list keeps names distinctive and allows any name associated with catastrophic impacts to be retired and replaced.
