Why did Lake Baikal create a special problem for the railway?

The lake lay between finished rail sections, and its steep shores, ice, waves and unstable geology all pushed back against the straight line the engineers wanted.

A locomotive was too heavy for the ice, so wagons crossed behind horses. It was an improvisation forced by the war, not a permanent crossing.
