Tidal friction and Kelvin's estimates of solar and terrestrial age make this an extrapolation of the best science of 1895, later overturned by radioactivity and fusion.

What did the leading physics of the 1850s and 1860s predict about the earth's long-term future?

Thomson and Clausius established that energy in a closed system disperses; Thomson stated publicly in 1852 that the earth must in time become uninhabitable, and later dated the sun's fuel in tens of millions of years because fusion was unknown.

How should the novel's fourth-dimension argument be understood?

The book appeared in 1895; special relativity came in 1905 and Minkowski's spacetime in 1908. Wells drew on the 1880s vogue for the fourth dimension as geometry, with no light speed, simultaneity or time dilation involved.

How is the Time Traveller's account presented to the reader?

An unnamed guest frames the novel, describing two evenings at the inventor's house; almost the whole story is the Traveller talking, and the frame keeps the account at the status of unverified testimony.
