What you’ll learn

  1. The Islamic Golden AgeName at least two achievements of the Islamic Golden Age, such as algebra, hospitals, or architecture. At the same time as medieval Europe, the Islamic world enjoyed a Golden Age across the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain. Great cities like Baghdad became centres of learning, with libraries and a famous House of Wisdom where scholars studied and translated books from around the world. Scholars developed algebra (the word comes from Arabic), built some of the first hospitals, studied the stars, and created beautiful buildings with grand domes and detailed patterns.
  2. Mansa Musa and MaliDescribe who Mansa Musa was and why he is remembered. In West Africa, the mighty Empire of Mali grew wealthy in the 1300s from trading gold and salt across the Sahara. Its most famous ruler, Mansa Musa, is often described as one of the richest people in all of history. His 1324 pilgrimage to Mecca, with an enormous group carrying vast amounts of gold, spread stories of Mali's wealth across Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. Under him, Timbuktu became a famous centre of trade and learning.
  3. Song China and the Silk RoadDescribe achievements of Song Dynasty China and explain how the Silk Road connected the medieval world.Travel east and you reach China, ruled for much of the Middle Ages by the Song Dynasty and one of the most advanced places on Earth. Chinese inventors gave the world printing, paper money, the magnetic compass, and gunpowder. All these distant lands were connected through trade routes, above all the Silk Road — a network stretching thousands of miles between China, India, the Middle East, and Europe, carrying goods and, most importantly, ideas.
