🏷️ The difference between doing badly and being bad
A bumblebee in a museum drawer carries a label with a place, a date and the name of the man who caught it. Every claim on it is small enough to check. The sentence that arrives after your own bad afternoon carries none of those things.
What you’ll learn
- One Afternoon, One LabelSeparate the three dials of an explanation — internal, stable, global — and identify the one that widens a single event into a claim about a person.A museum label carries a place, a date and a collector, so every claim on it can be checked. The sentences you write about yourself after a bad afternoon carry none of those, and only the global dial decides how far they reach.
- What Comes Back When You Go And CheckExplain why an attempt to check a self-claim tends to return a category rather than a specific episode, and name the three routes by which the search stalls.Asked for one day, memory often hands back a class of days. Capture, functional avoidance and limited executive capacity each stop the search a floor early, and a wall of summaries is convincing precisely because it is complete.
- The Same Machine, Built Out Of PraiseDistinguish feedback aimed at the person from feedback aimed at the process, and recognise that positive person feedback produces the same vulnerability as negative.Sixty-seven children criticised and sixty-four children praised produced the same result: when the feedback named the person, a later setback brought self-blame and collapse. Praise for being clever did the same thing across six studies of fifth-graders.
- Say It SmallerRewrite a person-level self-claim as a process-level one carrying a place, a date and a behaviour — and hold the method's own evidence to the same standard. The repair is narrower, not kinder: a sentence you could write on a specimen label. And the most appealing version of this idea, self-complexity as a stress buffer, is the one the meta-analysis did not support.
Questions this course answers
A deadline slips. Which version of the thought is the one Abramson, Seligman and Teasdale would call global?
Global is the dial that asks how far the claim reaches. 'I am unreliable' names a person rather than an event, so no particular Thursday can contradict it. Internal and stable are separate dials — a cause can be your doing, and lasting, and still be confined to one corner of your life.
Complete the sentence about what comes back instead of a memory
The phrase is from their 2007 review in Psychological Bulletin. The task that exposes it goes back to Williams and Broadbent in 1986: a cue word goes in, and what should come back is one occasion on one day.
In Kamins and Dweck's second study the children were praised, not criticised. What happened when a later task went badly?
Sixty-four children, every task successful, and the person-praise group still showed more self-blame, lower self-assessment and less persistence on a later setback. The authors concluded that person feedback, even when positive, can create vulnerability and a sense of contingent self-worth.
Put the three documented ways a search for a specific memory stalls in the order they appear in the caption.
All three end in the same place: a summary in your hand where an episode should be. The third is where acute stress enters — Shields, Sazma and Yonelinas found stress impaired working memory and cognitive flexibility, with more nuanced effects on inhibition.
Match each person-level sentence to the process-level rewrite that could actually be checked.
The rewrite is not gentler. It is narrower — a place, a date and a behaviour — which is what makes it checkable and what makes it tell you something about the next time.
Linville's self-complexity buffering result is in this course, and so is the review that failed to support it. Why include both?
An idea can be attractive, well-motivated and supported by one careful prospective study, and still not survive being pooled with everything else. Keeping both in view is what it looks like to hold a claim at the width its evidence supports.
