What you’ll learn

  1. Sounds and the AlphabetPronounce Spanish vowels, tricky consonants, and word stress accurately.Spanish vowels are pure and consistent (ah, eh, ee, oh, oo) and spelling is highly regular. A few letters differ from English: silent h, raspy j and soft g, y-like ll, and tapped versus rolled r. Two stress rules plus written accent marks tell you which syllable to emphasize.
  2. Greetings and IntroductionsGreet people, introduce yourself, and choose between formal and informal address.Learn greetings for every hour, how to say goodbye, and the crucial tu (informal) versus usted (formal) distinction. Introduce yourself with 'Me llamo...' and use courtesy words like por favor, gracias, de nada, and perdon to sound natural and respectful.
  3. The Four Essential VerbsUse ser, estar, tener, and ir correctly, and recognize the three regular verb patterns.Ser expresses permanent identity; estar expresses states and location. Tener means 'to have' and covers many feelings (Tengo hambre). Ir means 'to go' and makes an easy future with 'ir a' plus a verb. Regular verbs fall into -ar, -er, and -ir families with predictable endings.
  4. Ordering Food and DrinkOrder food and drink politely and handle a menu, a waiter, and the bill.Use 'Quisiera...' to order politely, learn core food and drink vocabulary, and ask 'La cuenta, por favor' for the bill. 'Me gusta / me gustan' express likes, 'con' and 'sin' add or remove items, and phrases like 'Soy vegetariano' handle dietary needs.
  5. Directions and TravelAsk for and understand directions and navigate transport and travel situations.Ask '?Donde esta...?' and understand answers like a la derecha, a la izquierda, and todo recto. Learn transport and place vocabulary, buy tickets, and use lifesavers like '?Puede ayudarme?'. Spanish is spoken by about 500 million people across more than twenty countries with a shared core.
  6. Numbers and TimeCount to one hundred, tell the time, and give days, months, and dates.Learn numbers 0-100, joining tens and ones with 'y' (treinta y uno). Tell time with 'Es la una' and 'Son las...', using y for minutes past and menos for minutes to. Days and months are lowercase, and dates follow 'el + number + de + month.'
  7. Gender and ArticlesUnderstand noun gender, the article system, plurals, and adjective agreement.Every noun is masculine or feminine, usually signaled by -o or -a endings with some exceptions. Articles (el, la, los, las; un, una) match gender and number, so learn nouns with their article. Plurals add -s or -es, and adjectives agree in gender and number, usually following the noun.

Questions this course answers

How are the five Spanish vowels pronounced?

Spanish vowels are pure and never change: a (ah), e (eh), i (ee), o (oh), u (oo), which makes spelling highly regular.

How is the letter 'h' pronounced in the word 'hola'?

In Spanish the letter h is always silent, so 'hola' is pronounced 'OH-lah.'

What does a written accent mark, like in 'cafe,' tell you?

A written accent always marks the stressed syllable, so 'cafe' is stressed 'ka-FEH.'

What is the difference between 'tu' and 'usted'?

Tu is the informal 'you' for friends and peers; usted is the formal, respectful 'you' for strangers, elders, and officials.

Which phrase means 'My name is...'?

'Me llamo...' literally means 'I call myself...' and is the most common way to introduce yourself.

What is the polite reply to 'gracias'?

'De nada' means 'you're welcome' (literally 'of nothing') and is the standard warm reply to 'thank you.'
