Why can a Mars landing not be flown from Earth?

On 18 February 2021 the one-way light time was 11 minutes 22 seconds. Perseverance touched down at 20:44 UTC; Earth found out at 20:55.

What is a landing ellipse?

Curiosity's Gale Crater target was about 20 by 7 km; Perseverance's Jezero target was 7.7 by 6.6 km.

What does an ablative heat shield actually do with the heat?

The outside of Perseverance's shield reached about 1,300 °C roughly 75 seconds after entry. The tiles are meant to be ruined.

How does a blunt capsule with no wings steer during entry?

Curiosity's aeroshell flew at a lift-to-drag ratio of about 0.24, produced by an offset centre of gravity. Six balance masses are thrown off roughly fifteen seconds before parachute deploy to remove the offset again.

Why is the parachute discarded rather than used all the way down?

Even a 21.5-metre canopy leaves the vehicle falling too fast in this atmosphere. The chute buys altitude and time, then has to leave.

What does Terrain-Relative Navigation give the spacecraft that radar cannot?

Radar measures altitude and velocity. The Lander Vision System supplied position — under 40 metres relative to an onboard map, in less than ten seconds.
