Why HereExplain why Rome exists at this specific spot — the ford, the salt road, the hills — and why its first great work was a drain.Rome sits 25 km inland: far enough to be safe from seaborne raiders, close enough for river cargo, at the Tiber Island — the lowest reliable ford, where the coast road crossing meets the inland salt road. The hills are defensible volcanic tuff; the marsh between them was drained in the 6th century BC by the Cloaca Maxima, creating the Forum and turning separate villages into one city.

The Layer CakeUnderstand why Rome is a layer cake — the ground rose around the city — using San Clemente as the core sample.The Forum lies ten metres below the modern street because rubble was levelled rather than removed, the Tiber deposited silt, and Romans filled old buildings in as foundations — ancient Rome was buried by construction, not destroyed by it. San Clemente stacks a 12th-century basilica on a 4th-century one on 1st-century houses containing a mithraeum, with a Republican stream still audible below.

The Material That Made It PossibleExplain the engineering and chemistry that made monumental Rome possible — the Pantheon's dome and pozzolanic concrete.The Pantheon's 43.3 m unreinforced dome — still the world's largest — stands because it lightens with height (travertine aggregate at the base grading to pumice at the oculus), is coffered to cut mass, and hides relieving arches in a six-metre-thick base wall. Roman concrete works because pozzolana, volcanic ash, reacts with lime to give a hydraulic binder that sets underwater; a 2023 MIT-led study argues its lime clasts make it self-healing.

Water Made Rome — and Losing It Unmade RomeShow that Rome's aqueducts were the load-bearing part of its civilisation, and that losing them physically moved the city.Eleven aqueducts served Rome by AD 300, running on gravity at a few metres per kilometre and mostly underground — the arches are only the valley crossings. When the Goths cut them in 537, the hills (all above the water table) became uninhabitable and the city collapsed down to the Tiber bend, which is where the centro storico still is. Popes restored the aqueducts from 1453, and each restoration got a monumental fountain — the Trevi is the display end of Agrippa's Aqua Virgo of 19 BC.

The Popes Rebuilt the City as a Machine for PilgrimsExplain Baroque Rome as the solution to a pilgrimage logistics problem, and what obelisks are actually for.Sixtus V (1585–90), with Domenico Fontana, drove straight streets between the seven pilgrimage basilicas so Jubilee crowds could find them, and re-erected ancient obelisks — dug out of abandoned circuses, topped with crosses — as visible targets marking each terminus. Rome now has thirteen standing, more than Egypt. Baroque is architecture composed for a viewer in motion; Bernini's colonnade is the definitive statement.
  7. 1870: A Capital Nobody Was Ready ForExplain how a brand-new Italian state rebuilt Rome into a capital, and what that cost the ancient city.Italian troops breached the Aurelian Wall at Porta Pia on 20 September 1870; the capital moved from Florence in 1871 and Pius IX declared himself a prisoner in the Vatican. Italy had to invent an administrative capital out of a town of 200,000 — hence the ministry blocks, the Vittoriano (1885–1911), and then Mussolini's Via dei Fori Imperiali (1932), paved over the Imperial Fora after demolishing the inhabited Alessandrino quarter, and EUR, built for a 1942 world's fair that never happened.

A Country Inside the CityExplain how a sovereign state fits inside Rome — the 1929 Lateran settlement and its extraterritorial islands.From 1870 to 1929 the popes refused to leave the Vatican, calling themselves prisoners. Mussolini and Cardinal Gasparri settled the Roman Question on 11 February 1929 with a treaty, a financial convention and a concordat, creating a 44-hectare state — the world's smallest — of about 800 residents, with citizenship attached to your job. The treaty also made properties across Rome extraterritorial, including San Giovanni in Laterano, the pope's actual cathedral.

How Rome Actually WorksUnderstand the working city — its enormous rural comune, the GRA, why the metro can't be dug, and the tourism arithmetic.The comune covers about 1,285 km², much of it farmland — on paper the most agricultural municipality in Europe — and the 68-km GRA ring, not the rioni, is the real social boundary. Rome has three metro lines because central digging hits archaeology and the law requires excavation; Line C's San Giovanni station became a museum of its own finds. Roughly 35 million visitors against 2.7 million residents hollow out the centro storico, but Rome survives it because it is a working capital, not a museum.

Questions this course answers

Why was Rome founded 25 km inland rather than on the coast, like most great Mediterranean trading cities?

Rome wasn't founded next to a trade route; it was founded on an intersection — a toll booth with hills. Far enough inland that a raider must march to reach you, close enough that a cargo can still come up the river.

What was the significance of the Cloaca Maxima, built under the Etruscan kings?

The first great Roman public work was a drain, and it created the shared ground that belonged to no single hill. In Rome the infrastructure comes first and the civilisation grows on top of it — a habit visible for the next 2,500 years. Parts of the Cloaca still carry water today.

Why does the Roman Forum sit roughly ten metres below the modern street?

Cities without bulldozers rise. And the specifically Roman habit of building on top rather than clearing away is why so much survives: ancient Rome was buried by construction, not destroyed by it. The Forum's current status as a sunken pit is entirely modern.

What makes San Clemente the best single lesson in Roman stratigraphy?

That last clause is the point. Under a great many Roman churches is another church, and under that a Roman house. The mithraeum makes it vivid: Christianity's serious rival is in the physical basement, holding up the winner.

Piazza Navona's shape — long, with rounded ends and a continuous curved wall of buildings — is explained by what?

The single most useful skill for reading Rome, and it's free: watch the shapes. Where a street curves for no reason, something round used to be there — as at Via di Grotta Pinta, which is the auditorium of Pompey's theatre preserved as a street plan.

Why is the Pantheon almost perfectly intact while the Colosseum is half missing?

The survival rule in Rome has nothing to do with beauty or importance. Buildings that stayed useful survive whole; obsolete ones were mined for material, and what remains is whatever was too awkward to carry.
