  1. How Rockets PushUnderstand that rockets push by shooting hot gas out the bottom, using the same idea as a zooming balloon.A rocket pushes hot gas down, and the gas pushes the rocket up. A balloon zooming around the room shows the same idea. Every push has a push back. Rockets make their push by burning fuel, and they carry their own oxidizer so they can make fire even in space.

Parts of a RocketName the main parts of a rocket: engines, fuel tanks, stages, and the payload with its nose cone.A rocket has engines at the bottom for pushing, big tanks holding lots of fuel, and a payload on top like a spaceship or satellite. Rockets are often built in stages that drop away when empty, making the rocket lighter so it can climb higher.

Countdown to OrbitUnderstand liftoff, why a rocket flies sideways, what orbit means, and why astronauts float.After the countdown, the rocket lifts off and climbs, then tips over to fly fast sideways. Going fast sideways puts it into orbit, circling Earth without falling down. Astronauts float because they and their spaceship are all falling around Earth together.
  4. Famous RocketsMeet famous rockets: the Saturn V, the Space Shuttle, and modern reusable rockets, and what rockets do for us.The mighty Saturn V carried astronauts to the Moon in 1969. The Space Shuttle had wings and could fly again. New rockets can land upright and be reused. Rockets carry astronauts, launch satellites, send robots to explore, and may take us even farther one day.

How does a rocket push itself up?

A rocket shoots hot gas out the bottom, and pushing the gas down makes the gas push the rocket up!

A balloon that you let go zooms around the room because...

Just like a rocket, the air comes out the back and the balloon flies forward. Same trick!

Why can a rocket burn fuel in space where there is no air?

A rocket carries both fuel and an oxidizer, so it can make fire even where there is no air.

Where are a rocket's engines?

The engines are at the bottom. That's where fuel burns and the hot gas shoots out to push the rocket up.

Most of a big rocket is made of...

Rockets need lots and lots of fuel to reach space, so most of the rocket is big tanks holding it.

Why does a rocket drop its empty stages?

Dropping empty parts makes the rocket lighter, like taking off an empty backpack, so it can zoom higher using less fuel.
