🦜 Rainforest Animals
Journey through the layers of the tropical rainforest, meeting toucans and monkeys in the treetops and jaguars and frogs on the floor of Earth's richest habitat.
What you’ll learn
- A World of LayersLearn that rainforests grow near the equator, are the most species-rich habitat, and are built in layers.Tropical rainforests grow in the warm, wet band near the equator and are the most species-rich habitat on Earth. They are built in layers like the floors of a building: the sunny canopy on top, the shady understory in the middle, and the dark forest floor at the bottom. Different animals live at each level.
- The Sunny CanopyIdentify canopy animals like toucans, monkeys, and sloths and how they are suited to treetop life. The canopy is the sunny roof of the rainforest, full of fruit and flowers, so more animals live here than in any other layer. Toucans use big beaks to reach fruit, monkeys swing on strong arms and gripping tails, and sloths hang upside down and move slowly. Each canopy animal is built for life in the treetops.
- Understory and Forest FloorIdentify understory and forest-floor animals and see how all rainforest animals connect in a food web.Below the canopy, the shady understory is home to tree frogs, snakes, and insects, and the dark forest floor is where jaguars prowl and ants recycle leaves. All these animals are connected in a food web: plants feed insects and monkeys, hunters like jaguars eat other animals, and decomposers break down what falls.
Questions this course answers
Where on Earth are tropical rainforests found?
Rainforests grow in the hot, rainy band around the equator, like the Amazon in South America.
What are the three main layers of a rainforest?
A rainforest has a sunny canopy on top, a shady understory in the middle, and a dark forest floor at the bottom.
Which animals live in the sunny canopy at the top of the rainforest?
The canopy is home to toucans, monkeys, and sloths, which live high among the sunny treetops.
How does a toucan's big beak help it?
The toucan's long beak lets it reach fruit on branches too thin to stand on.
Which animal prowls the dark forest floor?
Jaguars hunt on the shadowy forest floor, along with ants and other ground animals.
Why is the rainforest called the richest habitat on Earth?
Rainforests hold more different kinds of animals than any other habitat on the planet.
