The Four QuadrantsUnderstand that a grid has four quadrants and that coordinates can be negative.A full coordinate grid extends in all directions from the origin, with positive and negative numbers on both axes. The axes split it into four quadrants, each with its own signs for x and y. Right and up are positive; left and down are negative.

A point's quadrant is decided by its signs, and to read a plotted point you count across then up or down, writing it as (x, y) with the correct signs.
