What you’ll learn

  1. Illuminated ManuscriptsDescribe what an illuminated manuscript is and who made them. Before printing machines existed, every book was written by hand, and the most beautiful were illuminated manuscripts — 'illuminated' means 'lit up' because their pages glowed with color and shining gold. Most were made by monks in monasteries, who wrote the words with quill pens and decorated the pages with tiny paintings, patterned borders, richly decorated first letters, and real gold leaf. Each page was a work of art as well as a book.
  2. Gothic CathedralsName at least two features of Gothic cathedral architecture, such as pointed arches, flying buttresses, and stained glass.Medieval builders created Gothic cathedrals — taller, lighter, and grander than earlier buildings. Pointed arches carried weight upward, and flying buttresses, stone 'arms' on the outside, pushed back against the walls to hold them up. That support let builders fill the walls with huge stained-glass windows made of colored glass and lead. Because most people couldn't read, the glowing windows told Bible stories in pictures.
  3. Art of Faith and PowerExplain how medieval art, from the Bayeux Tapestry to cathedrals, expressed both faith and power.Medieval art appeared beyond books and windows too. The Bayeux Tapestry is an embroidered cloth almost 70 metres long that tells the story of the Norman Conquest of 1066, and monks sang Gregorian chant — calm, flowing music with no instruments — in echoing stone halls. Medieval people poured skill and treasure into art for two reasons: to show deep faith by honoring God with beauty, and to show power by displaying the might of the Church and rulers.
