  1. What a Song Is DoingTreat a song as a system for creating expectation and then satisfying, delaying, or surprising it.A song is not decoration. It is a machine for tension and release. Meyer (1956) and Huron (2006) describe the ear as a prediction engine; every later tool is a knob on that engine. Theory is a map of what the ear already knows.
  2. Pitch, Scale, HomeExplain pitch, the octave as a 2:1 frequency ratio, twelve-tone equal temperament, and the tonic as home.Pitch is vibration rate. An octave is the ratio 2:1. A modern piano divides that octave into twelve equal semitones — equal temperament, not a law of nature. A scale picks a subset and names one note tonic; the major-scale recipe is W–W–H–W–W–W–H. Major and minor colour home, as a convention listeners have absorbed.

Melody and ChordsExplain melody as pitch plus duration, steps versus leaps, and the triad built by stacking thirds.A melody moves by singable steps and dramatic leaps; most memorable tunes are mostly steps. Contour builds or releases tension; a hook uses repetition with small variation. A triad stacks thirds (C–E–G). Lowering the middle note makes it minor. Consonant stacks rest; dissonant ones, including sevenths, want to move.

  5. Groove, Words, ArrangementExplain 4/4 durations, the backbeat, prosody, and arrangement as an energy curve.In 4/4 a whole note fills the bar. The backbeat accents 2 and 4; syncopation displaces the expected accent and wants the meter restored. Prosody matches word stress to musical stress — gui-TAR, not GUI-tar. Arrangement subtracts before a chorus so it can add into it. The last move is to go listen, and to decide when to come home.

A scale sets up a hierarchy: the tonic feels like rest, and the other notes lean toward it — the seventh especially wants to resolve up to the tonic.

What combination describes most memorable melodies, and how does a hook stay catchy?

Great tunes are largely smooth steps with a few well-placed leaps. A hook balances repetition (comfort) with slight variation (novelty).

The V chord functions as peak tension in a key — it holds the leading note that strains upward to home. A V→I authentic cadence resolves that tension.
