Glass is an amorphous solid of sand, soda, and lime. Nature makes it as obsidian and fulgurites. With no crystal planes, it fails from surface flaws in a conchoidal break.

What is the honest scientific description of glass?
Zanotto showed a cathedral pane cannot slump on any human timescale. Glass is a genuine amorphous solid.
In ordinary soda-lime glass, what is the soda for?
Silica melts around 1,700°C. Soda brings the melt down; lime then stops the glass dissolving.
Why does glass soften over a range instead of melting at one temperature?
No long-range order means no single temperature at which a lattice collapses. The network loosens gradually.
What is obsidian?
Obsidian is volcanic glass. Its flakes can be edged finer than a steel scalpel, which is why ancient knappers — and some modern surgeons — have used it.
When do the earliest closed glass vessels appear?
Beads are older, from the later third millennium BCE. Hollow vessels a thousand years later were still a luxury, made on a core or cast and ground.
Where and when was glassblowing invented?
The earliest debris is from Jerusalem in the last decades of the first century BCE. A gather on a pipe turned a day's work into minutes.
