Why does a whale fall matter so much more than the food that normally reaches the deep seafloor?
Most of the deep sea lives on marine snow. The sediments directly under a single large carcass get a pulse of organic carbon equivalent to about two thousand years of that background rain.
What mainly decides whether a dead whale ends up on the deep seafloor?
Whales dying naturally are usually thin, and therefore dense, so most sink. Below about a kilometer the pressure is too great for decomposition gases to lift a carcass back up. The working estimate is that around half of dying whales settle on the deep floor and stay.
What happens during the mobile-scavenger stage of a whale fall?
Measured removal rates run at 40 to 60 kilograms a day. The soft tissue can be gone within months, or take up to about two years on a large carcass in cold water.
Where does the energy for a whale fall's chemosynthetic community come from?
Whale bone is unusually rich in lipids. Breaking them down without oxygen releases sulfide, and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria turn that into food for the rest of the community on the skeleton.
