Questions this course answers

Why does the header get changed rather than being built into the combine?

The header is the machine's first decision about what the field becomes. A Western through-flow combine cuts 4-5 m at a time; a Japanese hold-on machine works about 1 m and feeds only the panicle to the drum.

A UGA extension bulletin says typical combine harvest losses are what, against what they should be?

Bulletin 973 opens with exactly that gap — and adds that most operators do not know which end of it they are on, because they have never measured behind the machine.

You lay a ten-square-foot frame in the standing crop ahead of the combine. What does that count measure?

Three positions, three different numbers: standing crop gives pre-harvest loss, immediately in front of the machine adds header loss, behind it gives the total. Subtracting between them isolates each one.

What is the threshing drum and concave setting actually trading off?

It is a compromise with no clean answer, and the right point moves with the crop and the moisture.

Why is running more material through the tailings return not simply better?

It is a balancing loop. Recovery is real, but it competes for the same drum and the same throughput, so the completeness-maximising setting is not the throughput-maximising one.
