Why does an oyster reef provide more habitat than a flat muddy bottom?
Three-dimensional shell structure creates spaces and flow conditions that fish, crabs, worms, and attached organisms can use. NOAA found juvenile crabs survived predators much better on a reef than on sand.
A North Carolina tidal-creek study found chlorophyll often dropped as water passed over living reefs, but total suspended solids did not change. What should you take from that?
Cressman et al. (2003) measured summer chlorophyll drops of about 10 to 25 percent downstream of reefs, with no change in total suspended solids. Filtration is real and limited.
Why is placing shell only the beginning of oyster reef restoration?
Foundation material fails if depth, salinity, currents, sediment, predators, disease, or harvest pressure keep oysters from establishing and renewing the structure. NOAA judges restored reefs by size, height, complexity, density, and biomass, not by the day the shell was dumped.
