Questions this course answers
An ant is picked up at a feeder and released on a patch of desert it has never seen. What does it do first?
The home vector is anchored to where the trip began, so a displaced ant runs it out even in a place where the nest cannot be.
Ants given longer legs at the feeder run past the nest on the way home. What does that show?
Stilts lengthen the stride, so the same stride count covers more ground and the ant overshoots. Stumps produce the opposite error.
Why do Cataglyphis fortis colonies in the featureless centre of a salt pan build tall nest hills?
Knocking a hill down triggers rebuilding, but an artificial landmark placed by the entrance stops it — the hill is doing a visual job.
Desert ants trained to two feeders can travel a new route straight from one to the other. Why does that matter?
The test ran in walled channels with no landmarks in view, so the shortcut had to come from stored goal vectors and the running path integrator.
