Why does a change order typically cost more than the identical work would have cost in the original scope?

A change order is rarely just the new work. It is the new work, plus undoing what was built on the old decision, plus paying a trade to make a special trip, and it is priced by the one contractor already on site rather than by three competing for the job.

What is the practical purpose of taping an island's outline on your floor for a week?

The reason changes come late is that people cannot picture a room from a drawing. A crude physical mock-up produces the real reaction early, while changing your mind still costs nothing.

Why does moving a toilet three feet involve the structure and the envelope, not just plumbing?

The drain has to slope continuously toward the stack, so the space it drops into is the floor structure — a joist question. And its vent must reach open air, so it exits through the roof, which is an envelope penetration needing flashing.

The trap holds a plug of water that blocks sewer gas. Without a vent to admit air behind the flowing water, the draining slug pulls a vacuum and sucks the trap dry — and the barrier is gone.

Why can't you conclude a wall is non-bearing just because your house has roof trusses?

The truss rule is a real tendency, not a guarantee. Houses accumulate history: a post added in the attic decades ago can put a concentrated load on a wall that looks identical to its non-bearing neighbor.

What usually happens when a bearing wall is removed without an adequate replacement?

The danger is precisely that it isn't dramatic. Load finds another path, the framing bends, and the symptoms creep in over a year or more — by which point the fix is jacking a settled house, not patching a wall.
