Sea-level swings have made Florida twice its present width and have nearly drowned it. The platform is limestone — the compacted remains of shells and reefs — and limestone dissolves.

Questions this course answers
Why does Florida's outline change so dramatically with modest shifts in sea level, compared with a coast like California's?
Geometry, not erosion. On a near-flat ramp, a few metres of vertical change translates into tens of miles of horizontal shoreline movement. In the last ice age the platform was nearly all dry and Florida was about twice as wide; in warm interglacials most of it drowned.
A Florida sinkhole opens after a drought during which nearby wellfields pumped heavily. What is the most accurate account of why?
The cavity is thousands of years old. Groundwater filling it helps float the sand above; drop the water table and that support goes, and the sand drains into the rock until the surface collapses suddenly. That's why the state's own water use is part of the hazard — as at Winter Park in 1981.
Florida's springs discharge at about 72°F all year. Why does that specific temperature matter so much biologically?
Deep rock averages out the seasons, so spring water emerges at the state's annual mean. Manatees have little insulating fat and die of cold stress below roughly 68°F, so every winter they crowd into the springs. Water policy and manatee survival are therefore the same subject.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas insisted the Everglades was a river, not a swamp. What practical difference does that distinction make?
It's hydrology, not poetry. Because it's a flowing sheet on a two-inch-per-mile gradient, a road embankment acts as a dam and a canal acts as a drain. And because wading birds nest based on the dry-down concentrating fish, delivering the right annual volume at the wrong time still fails.
Why has the ground surface in the Everglades Agricultural Area dropped by several feet since the 1920s?
The peat only existed because waterlogging starved the decomposers of oxygen. Drainage restarted them, and the soil is being consumed rather than displaced — a fraction of an inch a year for a century. The 1924 subsidence post at Belle Glade, driven flush with the surface, now stands well above it.
The Tamiami Trail was built as a highway. Why do engineers now spend hundreds of millions of dollars replacing sections of it with bridges?
To build a road in a marsh you dredge a canal and pile the spoil into an embankment — which is exactly how you build a dam. The bridges are an attempt to let water walk south again. It's a very expensive apology for a decision made for entirely unrelated reasons in 1928.
