What you’ll learn

  1. Many Gods and GoddessesExplain that ancient Egyptians worshipped many different gods and goddesses, each with a special role. The ancient Egyptians believed in many gods and goddesses who cared for the world. Each one had a job: Ra was the sun god, Horus the sky god, Thoth the god of writing, and Bastet a protector. Gods were often shown with animal heads that gave a clue about their powers. Egyptians told stories, like Ra sailing his sun boat across the sky each day.
  2. Life After LifeDescribe the Egyptian belief that life continued after death in a beautiful afterlife. The Egyptians believed that after death, a person traveled to a happy new life in the afterlife. They pictured it as the Field of Reeds — sunny fields and rivers like the best of Egypt. To prepare, they carefully dried and wrapped the body to make a mummy, and painted tomb walls with pictures and wishes for the journey.
  3. Packed for the JourneyExplain why Egyptians filled tombs with food, jewelry, and precious objects for the dead person to use.Because Egyptians believed the afterlife was real, they packed tombs like suitcases for a forever journey: food, jewelry, games, furniture, and model boats. Little shabti statues were included to do the chores in the next world. All this care showed love — and today those tombs teach us what the Egyptians believed.
