- Earth's History in Deep TimeGrasp geologic deep time, the major eras, and how scientists date the past.Earth is 4.6 billion years old — 'deep time.' Geologists divide its history into eras: the Paleozoic, the Mesozoic (dinosaurs), and the Cenozoic (mammals). Relative dating uses rock layers and fossils; absolute dating uses radioactive decay as a natural clock to give precise ages.

The deepest hole reaches only about 12 km, so scientists use seismic waves — earthquake vibrations that pass through the planet — to map the hidden layers.
