Tiny computer chips hide inside traffic lights, washing machines, microwaves, and phones. A good clue that something has a computer is whether it has buttons, lights, or a screen and can count, remember, or change what it does.

Computers Follow InstructionsUnderstand that a program is a list of steps in order, like a recipe, and that a computer follows those steps exactly.A program is a set of instructions a computer follows one step at a time, in order — much like a recipe. Order matters: you cannot spin clothes dry before washing them. Because a computer does exactly what it is told and does not use common sense, a wrong or missing step leads to a silly result.

Everything Is Patterns and DotsLearn that pictures are stored as grids of tiny colored squares (pixels) and that computers work by spotting patterns in numbers.Every picture on a screen is made of tiny squares called pixels, and each square holds a number that chooses its color. So a picture is really a pattern of numbers. Computers are excellent pattern-spotters, which is the foundation for AI.

Because they lack common sense, they make mistakes and a person must always check their work. Anyone can learn to give a computer instructions — that is called coding.

Your friend says a wooden spoon has a computer inside because it helps in the kitchen. Why is that not quite right?

A computer does jobs by following steps and spotting patterns. A spoon has no buttons, lights, or chips and cannot do anything by itself — so it has no computer inside.

A robot pushes a closed jam jar onto the bread because no one told it to open the jar first. What does this show about computers?

A computer follows its steps exactly. If a step is missing or wrong, it will still do just what it was told — it does not fill in the gaps the way a person would.

How does a computer store a picture so it can show it on a screen?

Every screen picture is made of tiny squares called pixels. Each square holds a number for its color, so a whole picture is really a big pattern of numbers — exactly what computers are good at.

You show an AI only cat photos, then show it a dog. Why might it call the dog a cat?

AI learns patterns from the examples it is given. If it has only ever seen cats, that is the only pattern it knows, so it may wrongly match a dog to 'cat'. It needs dog examples to learn dogs.

Why should a person always check what a computer or AI does?

Computers follow instructions and patterns without common sense, so they make mistakes like changing the wrong word. A person needs to look and decide if the answer is right — the computer is a helper, not the boss.
