A double-wall tent sheds rain on the fly and lets your own moisture condense there instead of on you — if you pitch it taut, stake it, and vent it.
- The Sleep SystemUnderstand why cold-night heat loss is mostly downward, and build a sleep system where the pad's R-value does the insulating.On cold nights the sneakier heat loss is conduction into the ground, and body weight crushes the underside of a sleeping bag flat. The sleeping pad — rated by R-value, often around R-4 to match a bag's temperature rating — is the real insulation from below.
- Fire and the StoveBuild a reliable campfire with the fire triangle, extinguish it completely, and use a stove as the everyday kitchen — never inside a tent.Fire needs fuel, oxygen, and heat; climb the ladder of sizes in an existing ring and drown-stir-drown until cold. A canister stove is the everyday workhorse. Never run one in a closed tent: carbon monoxide is odorless and deadly.
- Water You Can TrustTreat all wild water and understand the trade-offs of boiling, filtering, and chemical treatment.Even clear wild water can carry germs you cannot see. CDC: a rolling boil of 1 minute (3 minutes above ~6,500 ft) is surest. Microfilters catch bacteria and protozoa but usually miss viruses. Iodine misses Cryptosporidium; chlorine dioxide needs several hours. Next-best after boiling is filter, then disinfect.

Why is a low, cozy-looking hollow often a poor place to pitch a tent?
Both cold air and water drain into low spots and pool overnight, turning a sheltered-looking hollow into a cold, wet sump. A slightly raised, flat, well-drained bench is better.
A camper wakes to find the inside of their tent wet even though it did not rain. The most likely cause is:
A sleeping person adds a surprising amount of moisture overnight. Without ventilation and an air gap under the fly, that moisture condenses on cool walls and drips back down — not a leak.

The ground is a cold heat sink, and your weight crushes the loft on the underside of your bag flat, so it insulates little. The insulating pad — not the bag — is what keeps you warm from below.
What does a sleeping pad's R-value tell you?
R-value measures resistance to heat flow. A higher R-value pad blocks more heat from escaping into the ground. Many bag temperature ratings assume a pad around R-4.

Fire needs fuel, oxygen, and heat together. Piling on big logs cuts off airflow and asks a small flame's heat to ignite wood that needs far more — so you climb the ladder of sizes instead.
