It is simultaneously America's largest agricultural producer, the center of global technology, and the center of global entertainment — three unrelated superpowers. It also holds the highest and lowest points in the contiguous U.S. 85 miles apart, the hottest air temperature ever recorded, the tallest tree, and the oldest tree.

The Central Valley grows a quarter of U.S. food on under 1% of its farmland. The catch: the growing season and the rainy season never overlap, so all of it is irrigated.

Non-Native population went from ~14,000 to ~250,000 by 1852, roughly a quarter of arrivals foreign — and California skipped the territorial stage to become a state in 1850. Few miners got rich; shovel-sellers did. Native population fell from ~150,000 to ~30,000 by 1870 in what the state itself now names genocide; Chinese laborers built the Central Pacific and got the 1882 Exclusion Act.

The California Aqueduct lifts water 2,000 feet over the Tehachapis, making the State Water Project one of the state's largest power users. Unregulated pumping until 2014 sank parts of the San Joaquin Valley 28 feet — permanently.
- Hollywood Went West to Get Away From EdisonExplain why the film industry moved west — and why the climate made it stay.Edison's Motion Picture Patents Company (1908) licensed who could film and sued those who did not comply, so independents fled 3,000 miles to Southern California, where process servers were slow and Mexico was two hours away. Then the climate took over: insensitive early stock needed sunlight, and a guaranteed six-month cloudless dry season let studios schedule production and shoot 300 days a year — with ocean, desert, mountains, and forest all within two hours. Agglomeration then locked the cluster in place.

In 1957 the 'traitorous eight' quit Shockley to found Fairchild, seeding Intel, AMD, and dozens of 'Fairchildren'. The decisive structural cause is legal: California voids non-competes under Bus. & Prof. Code §16600, so every departure became a company — while Massachusetts's enforceable non-competes made Route 128 consolidate instead.

What makes California's economy genuinely unusual, beyond its size?
Being the world's fourth or fifth largest economy is remarkable; being America's largest farm state AND the center of global tech AND the center of global film is stranger. Iowa does not also make movies. The course's question is why all three landed in one place — and the answer keeps returning to the land.
Why is the Central Valley one of the flattest, most fertile places on Earth?
Wall, trough, coast. The Sierra is a tilted granite batholith on the east, the Coast Ranges on the west, and the valley between them has been collecting their erosion for millions of years. That is why it is both dead flat and extraordinarily deep in soil.
Why does the Sierra snowpack matter more to California than the same amount of rain would?
The mountain does the storage for free, on a schedule. This is why a warm winter is a catastrophe even at normal precipitation totals: the water still arrives, but as rain in February when nobody needs it, and it is gone by July when everybody does.
How does the Sierra Nevada create Death Valley?
Rising air expands and cools, and cool air cannot hold vapor, so it falls out — 80 inches a year on the west slope. The air that crests is wrung dry, and descending air compresses and warms, becoming thirstier still. The driest place in North America is made by the mountain beside it.
What kind of plate boundary is the San Andreas Fault, and what does it mean for Los Angeles?
Nothing dives here; the plates slide. West of the fault — Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara — rides northwest at ~2 in/yr, measured continuously by GPS. In roughly 15 million years LA and San Francisco will be neighbors. California is not one landmass but two, sliding.
According to elastic rebound theory, why is a fault segment that has been quiet for a long time a concern rather than a reassurance?
An earthquake is not the plates moving — it is the plates having failed to move for a century and then catching up in seconds. Reid derived this from survey data around 1906, when the ground jumped up to 20 feet. The southern San Andreas has not ruptured since ~1857, which is exactly why it worries seismologists.
