📘 An engine turns fuel into spinning motion

Most cars move by converting chemical energy in fuel into mechanical rotation inside an engine. In a gasoline four-stroke engine, intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust repeat in each cylinder, pushing pistons that turn a crankshaft.

What you’ll learn

  1. Power and motionExplain how engines produce torque and how the drivetrain adapts speed to the road.Fuel becomes rotation; transmissions and differentials match engine speed to wheel needs.
  2. Control and safetyDescribe steering, braking, tire grip, and basic stability assistance.Steering sets direction; brakes dissipate energy; tires are the real interface with the road.
  3. Fuel, air, and exhaustTrace air-fuel control, emissions hardware, and supporting cooling and oil systems.Combustion needs metered fuel and air; exhaust treatment and fluids keep the engine alive.

Questions this course answers

What does a transmission mainly do?

Transmissions trade rotational speed for torque across driving conditions.

Where does braking actually slow the car?

Brakes create friction at the wheels; tires transfer that force to the pavement.

Why do engines need both cooling and lubrication?

Heat must be shed and moving parts need oil films to survive operation.
