Why Carriers Replaced BattleshipsSee how Taranto, Pearl Harbor, and Midway moved the decisive weapon from the gun to the carrier — without repeating the Midway deck-load myth.Battleship guns reached a few dozen miles. Carrier aircraft reached hundreds. Swordfish from Illustrious wrecked three Italian battleships at Taranto on 11 November 1940. Pearl Harbor's 353 aircraft from six carriers missed the American flattops. At Midway, dive-bombers wrecked three Japanese carriers in minutes and a fourth later that day; the strike aircraft were in the hangars, not packed on the roof.
  2. Catapult Launch and Arrested LandingExplain steam cats, EMALS, the target wire, the bolter, and the British angled deck.Steam catapults throw a jet to more than 150 miles an hour in about two seconds. Ford-class ships replace them with EMALS. On a four-wire deck the target is the three-wire; on a three-wire deck it is the two-wire. You land at high power so a bolter can fly. The angled deck, a 1950s British idea, is why a missed landing goes over water instead of into the park.

Crash and salvage also wear red, marked so you can tell them apart. The shooter will not fire until the pilot salutes. A foul line stops the recovery. The hangar below is the factory that keeps the airplanes flying.

Nimitz-class A4W cores are built for one mid-life RCOH in a 50-year life. Do not copy that 25-year figure onto Ford. Pacific Fleet's Nimitz numbers — 5,000 people, 18,000 meals, more than 400,000 gallons of water a day — are what a plant is for besides the screws. Most of the world's carriers still burn oil. Rickover's culture is why the U.S. ones do not.

The galley is a factory. Many of the people running it just left high school. Everyone fights fire because fire has nowhere to go. The number on the door is deck, frame, and side of the centerline. Morale is treated as a combat system because a tired deck is a dangerous deck.

Why did aircraft carriers displace battleships as the centerpiece of naval power?

Even the biggest battleship guns reached only a few dozen miles. Aircraft from a carrier could find and hit a ship or an airfield hundreds of miles away.

What did the 1940 British raid on Taranto demonstrate?

Twenty-one Swordfish from HMS Illustrious severely damaged Littorio, Caio Duilio, and Conte di Cavour at Taranto. Japanese planners studied the raid before Pearl Harbor.

Why was the Battle of Midway a landmark in naval warfare?

On 4 June 1942, dive-bombers wrecked Akagi, Kaga, and Soryu in minutes; Hiryu was wrecked later that day. Yorktown was lost. The ships themselves never sighted one another.

Why does a CATOBAR carrier need a catapult to launch heavy jets?

A loaded fighter wants thousands of feet of runway. A steam or electromagnetic catapult throws it to more than 150 miles an hour in about two seconds.

How does EMALS differ from a steam catapult?

EMALS replaces steam pistons with a long electromagnetic track. Ford-class ships use it; Nimitz-class ships still use steam.

Why does a pilot land on a carrier at high power rather than idle?

A bolter — missing every wire — is survivable only if the jet already has the power to fly off the angled deck.
