A 'stop' is a doubling or halving of light. The opening is a circle, and to halve a circle's area you divide its diameter by √2 (~1.414) — so each full-stop f-number is the previous one times 1.4.

What does it mean that aperture, shutter, and ISO form a 'triangle'?

The three dials each change exposure, but you can trade a stop lost on one for a stop gained on another and keep brightness identical — what changes is depth of field, motion rendering, and noise.

A portrait photographer wants a softly blurred background. Which aperture, and why?

Small f-number = wide opening = shallow depth of field, so only the subject is sharp and the background melts to blur. Getting closer and using a longer lens deepen the effect further.

Besides aperture, which two factors most affect depth of field?

Depth of field is a conversation between aperture, how close you are to the subject (closer = shallower), and focal length (longer = shallower). Aperture is the main lever but not the only one.

You want silky, flowing water in a daytime waterfall shot. What is essential besides a slow shutter?

A slow shutter records the water's motion as a smooth veil — but it blurs everything that moves, including camera shake, so the rocks only stay sharp if the camera is locked down on a tripod.

Roughly how fast should you keep the shutter to hand-hold a 200mm lens sharply, per the classic rule?

The rule of thumb is a shutter of at least 1 over the focal length. A 200mm lens magnifies shake, so you want about 1/200 s or faster. Stabilisation can buy several stops below this.
