Who is Northup before he is enslaved?

He was born free in New York in 1808, married Anne Hampton, and lived in Saratoga Springs as a farmer, laborer, and fiddler before the 1841 kidnapping.

What happens in Williams' slave pen in Washington?

Burch, a Washington trader, beats him with a paddle and cat-o'-nine-tails for insisting he is free. The name Platt is imposed later, in New Orleans, by Freeman.

Why does the Ford / Tibeats / Epps sequence matter?

Ford's kindness is real, and so is the chattel mortgage that later saves Northup's life. Tibeats and Epps make the same legal fact brutal. None of them can make ownership humane.

How does Bass help?

On 15 August 1852 Bass mails Parker and Perry. The letter reaches Anne, then Henry B. Northup, who uses New York's 1840 kidnapping statute to reclaim him.

What remains unresolved after the rescue?

He reaches Glens Falls in January 1853. Margaret does not recognize him; his mother has died. In Washington a magistrate will not hear his testimony, and Burch walks free.
