ROGET’S THESAURUS OF ENGLISH WORDS AND PHRASES, so classified and arranged as to facilitate the expression of ideas, and assist in literary composition. New and improved edition. By PETER MARK ROGET, late Secretary of the Royal Society, London, etc. Revised and edited, with a List of Foreign Words defined in English, and other additions, by BARNAS SEARS, D. D., President of Brown University. A NEW AMERICAN Edition, with ADDITIONS AND IMPROVEMENTS. 12mo, cloth, 2.00.
The first American edition having been prepared by Prof. Sears for strictly educational purposes, those words and phrases properly termed “vulgar,” incorporated in the original work, were omitted. These expurgated portions have, in the present edition, been restored, but by such an arrangement of the matter as not to interfere with the educational purposes of the American editor. Besides this it contains important additions not in the English edition, of words and phrases, and also an alphabetical list of “FOREIGN WORDS AND PHRASES”—Latin, French, Italian, Spanish, Greek, etc.—which most frequently occur in works of general literature, defined in English, making it in all respects more full and perfect than the author’s edition.
